Dry Creek Valley AVA, located in north-central Sonoma County, is one of the first designated American Viticultural Area in the state of California. Despite its small size—just 16 miles long and 2 miles wide—it has become one of California’s most respected regions. Its location near the coastal mountain range creates a natural barrier, limiting the influence of cold marine air during the day and allowing warm summer temperatures that promote full and even ripening. At night, cool fog from the Pacific Ocean flows into the valley, lowering temperatures and preserving natural acidity. Home to approximately 70 wineries, Dry Creek Valley is best known for its Zinfandel, widely regarded as one of the finest expressions of the variety in California. These wines typically show rich aromas of ripe dark fruit, baking spices, and earthy notes, with structure and depth that support long aging. The region is especially famous for old-vine Zinfandel, produced from vines 30 to 50 years old—and in some cases over 120 years old—which yield lower quantities of fruit but deliver greater concentration and intensity. Among white wines, Sauvignon Blanc is the signature variety, prized for its bright acidity, citrus and herbal aromas, and clean, vibrant style.
