Dundee Hills AVA (American Viticultural Area) is located inside the Willamette Valley in Oregon, about 30 miles southwest of the capital, Portland. It is home to many pioneer winemakers who 60 years ago planted the first vines of Pinot Noir in the state, seeing the potential of the area for growing outstanding cooler-climate varieties. Its unique red volcanic Jory soil, formed more than 14 million years ago, provides excellent drainage, while the Coastal Range protects the grapes from the cold breezes of the Pacific Ocean, making Dundee Hills one of the warmer growing areas in the Valley. They specialize in Burgundian varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc, which they use to produce reds, whites, rosé and sparkling wines. Pinot Noir is the star, expressing complex aromas of red fruit, earthiness, and elegant tannins.
