Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC is located in Le Marche region of eastern Italy, on the hills surrounding the city of Jesi and its several castles.  Written evidence points to wine being produced in the zone since 410 AD, when Roman troops used to prepare for battle by indulging in the white wines of the region.  Its calcareous and limestone soils, combined with the dry maritime climate caused by its proximity to the Adriatic Sea, create the perfect environment for Verdicchio, a white grape of medium body and sharp acidity.  Production laws state that only white wines can be made with at least 85% of Verdicchio with 15% of Trebbiano Toscana or Malvasia allowed in the blend.  Wines made in the original historical area can be labeled as “Classico”, while the ones harvested at peak ripeness levels can carry the label “Superiore”.  Verdicchio produces wines with aromas of peach, lemon, raw almonds, and saline in a variety of styles including still, sparkling, dry, or sweet.
